By June 1, Arlington County had seen more than 375 hospitalizations and 116 deaths from Covid-19.
Understanding the burden being shouldered by health care workers, the community rallied around Virginia Hospital Center. Kids sent hand-painted rocks for the hospital’s Healing Garden. Families posted signs of gratitude on light posts surrounding the medical campus.
In-kind donations—fielded through a military-style command center at the hospital—included thousands of masks, gloves, gowns, caps, shoe covers, 3D-printed face shields, hand sanitizer, hand cream and more.

Adrian Stanton, VHC’s Vice President of Business Development and Community Relationships was recently featured on Amazon.com’s blog about the company’s recent 10,000 meal food donation to local essential workers. VHC was one of several local organizations to receive meals from Freddie’s Beach Bar last month, in partnership with Amazon. “After nine intensive weeks of caring for COVID-19 patients, our staff was showing signs of wear and tear,” he shared. “I was amazed by how quickly Amazon jumped in to support us. Virginia Mercury: Hospital Testing Sheds Some Light on Extent of Asymptomatic COVID-19 in Virginia
In the weeks since Virginia’s hospitals have reopened for non-life-threatening procedures, many have implemented wider COVID-19 testing protocols to protect patients and staff from the virus.
In some cases, the results have been illuminating. In a Thursday call with the Virginia Nurses Association, Melody Dickerson, the senior vice president and chief nursing officer for Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, said her facility had been testing all admitted patients for the last three to four weeks.
“I would tell everyone on the call that if you’re not doing that, it’s certainly something you should consider,” she added. Within the hospital’s labor and delivery department, 1.6 percent of mothers tested positive for COVID-19 with no symptoms. The number jumped to 1.8 percent for patients coming in for surgery, she said.
